Scott Martin
Born in the United States, Scott spent his formative years in Montreal then London, where he attended Harrow School. In 1984, he accepted a Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and won a freshman writing contest. In 1988, he graduated with a degree in Comparative Literature and left the South for a year in Colorado where he applied his academic qualifications to the science of high school soccer coaching, guiding his team to an unprecedented 0-15 record. Spending just $40 on fuel, he subsequently drove his VW Rabbit diesel to back to Charlotte where he now lives with his wife and young son. In Charlotte, Scott initially worked as a copywriter for a large department store chain. He then became the director of communications for The Bissell Companies where he organized the company's publicity and produced SouthPark Update magazine, winning a writing award for a profile of professional wrestler Ric Flair. Scott subsequently became associated with The Charlotte Observer where he was the Manager of Custom Publishing. In 2000, he left the corporate world to open his own shop, starting Ballantyne Magazine and writing for numerous companies and publications. Books in Scott's portfolio include The Insiders' Guide to Golf in the Carolinas and Ron Green's Shouting at Amen Corner, which he compiled. In 1999 and 2000, Scott placed third and second respectively in the Creative Loafing fiction contest. He plays to a six handicap and is a member of the National Association of Left Handed Golfers and the Carolinas Golf Reporters Association. In June, 2002 Scott won the Carolinas Golf Reporters championship.
